Performance Characteristics

The K-B Motor design provides an oversized shaft for heavy overhung loads, with the shaft length, material, and end machining supplied to suit the application.  The direct drive motor provides a simple, compact unit that eliminates the need for belt drives and the construction of motor mounting structures.  K-B Motors can be operated in any position; vertical, horizontal or angular.  Mounting designs can easily be adapted or altered to suit the customer's application.

K-B Motors are available in sizes from 1/3 to 75 horsepower in 3 phase induction motor speeds.  100 HP - 1800 RPM motors are also available.  Standard motors are 230 or 460 Volts, 60 Hz, but can be modified for special voltages and different frequencies such as 24 or 50 Hz.  Two speed motors can also be supplied on special order.

Construction Features

K-B Motors are water cooled.  It is recognized that in high temperature ranges there is no substitute for liquid cooling, if troublesome operation is to be avoided.  Effective cooling of the shaft by radiation moves the primary source of trouble at high temperatures, as it keeps the shaft rigid, preventing conduction of heat to the bearings and other parts of the unit.  Liquid cooling of the windings makes continuous operation possible at high ambient temperatures.  Since a through-shaft for a motor cooling fan is not required, hermetic sealing of the unit without the use of mechanical shaft seals becomes practical.  Mating flanges are accurately machined to provide gas tight joints when used with gaskets, or "O" rings.  With slight modification, the unit will hold high degrees of vacuum, or pressure.

Since proper cooling is provided for all parts of the K-B Motor, standard bearings operate at normal temperatures and no special lubrication is required.  The motors are pre-packed at the factory with high quality grease and have a provision for the addition of lubricant.  No other periodic maintenance is required.  Static seals provide positive sealing for the life of the unit.  Since rotating shaft seals are not required, expenses relating to special seal cooling and lubrication arrangements, periodic maintenance and adjustment, and eventual replacing of rotating seals are eliminated.
